glue? Actually magnetism, like gravity is an unexplained quality. It is no different than gravity or any other fundamental force in this regard. nobody really knows what it is or what it is caused by even though we can measure its effects. electricity, gravity, light, the weak force, the strong force all the same. mathematics can describe these forces as particles and as the exchange reactions of particle exchange but you can never get a kilogram of magnetism to hold onto and study.
Just one of those things, a magnet is something that sticks to metal and its stickiness is called magnetism.
edit, mainer's link to wikipedia is good, one of the better briefs on the subject that I have seen.
