Yahoo is okay, but the competion is selective. There's the free internet chess server at http://www.freechess.org . Thats one of the best out there.

Theres also MSN games, but that would most likely be similar to yahoo.

http://www.chessbase.com has a related site, but its a subscription. Its still excellent, however.

www.redhotpawn.com (thousands of players, at all levels).

http://www.chessworld.net/chessclubs/asplogin.asp

You can play for free at both of these sites. Becoming a subscriber allows you to play an unlimited number of games, but if you just want to play a handful of games at a time, you don't need to subscribe.

The subscription price is very inexpensive, I think it's about $20/year... I don't even play that many games at a time, but I subscribe anyway to help support the sites...

These are not 'real time' sites, they are correspondence sites... in other words, you would make a move, then receive an email from the site when your opponent moves... you and your opponent can set the time limits for the moves of your game, anywhere from 1 day to 1 week (might even have a two week limit, I'm not sure).

There's also:

http://www.itsyourturn.com/
(has other games in addition to chess)

gameknot
http://gameknot.com/

Internet chess club
http://www.chessclub.com/

world chess network

I have not personaly used these last sites I've listed, but I did bookmark them on my PC to check them out later.

I think you can play at all of these for free, but I'm not positive, you can check them out for yourself and see what you think.

Both redhotpawn and chessworld sites also feature discussion forums, so you can post comments there about any subject... redhotpawn, in particular, has debates going on every conceivable topic: chess, religion, politics, sports... it's a great site.

Of course, as far as playing with real people, any internet site is pretty much a crap shoot... but while there are undoubtedly a lot of cheaters on Yahoo, it seems to me that vast, vast majority of players on the redhotpawn and chessworld sites are legitimate. It's probably impossible to have as many members as they do without having a few cheaters, but chances are, you'll get a legitimate opponent.

The best place is ICC (Internet Chess Club) since they run software in the background to detect people using chess engines.
