When an potential employer calls a previous employer to check your reference, what can your current employer..

disclose? Title, pay, days absent, duties? I am especially interested in duties/tasks. Also, do mose companies refer reference checks to the HR department, or to your former manager/supervisor?

I have to check references daily. Most of the time, a former employer can only give me dates and positions held. Sometimes, I'll get people who will open up a bit more. I'll get my "Are they re-hireable?" question answered. Sometimes I'll get very detailed accounts on the person's attendance, performance, and attitude on the job. When I am called for a reference check. The most I am allowed to give out is position held and dates of employment.

It depends on what state you live in, to some extent.

Small businesses often don't have HR departments, so the employer will get your supervisor or the owner, in that case. A lot of companies will only verify employment, in order to protect themselves. That can work to your advantage or detriment. If you were great, they'll never hear it.

Some places want a signed a release before they chat about you -- read what you sign on the job application.

Where I live, an employer can provide any information that can be documented. If you signed a performance review or job description outlining your duties, then yes -- those could be discussed.

PS -- if you inflated what you did, then I suggest you bring it back to earth ASAP. Lesser experience is not nearly as big a turnoff as lying.

In general, a former employer can only disclose if you were employed there and the length of time and also if they would or would not rehire you. It probably varies from state to state, but most companies cannot disclose any other facts or details. Good luck in your job search.
