There is a huge difference between a ban by law and on imposed by a restaurant owner for whatever his or her reasons might be.

The first is an attempt to push the beliefs of a few onto everyone. It should not be allowed. This second is a matter of free choice. It should be welcomed.

This is the issue. If you pass a law against it in restaurants first, eventually smoking can end up be banned everywhere, including the home of the smoker. This is obviously "going too far."

Obesity is a major human health problem in the USA. Are you willing to ban the obese from restaurants? How about from other public places?

Most people who believe that second hand smoke is a major health problem have no idea how poorly most of the studies were done and interpreted. Science plays a small role in most of this. "Holier than thou" does seem to be involved.

Because the second hand smoke nazis are full of it. I'm for requiring seperate ventilated areas. Let the market drive whether people go to a restaraunt that allows smoking. We don't need more regulations and where does it all end. We gonna ban fat foods next, whether obese people can eat in restaraunts. For one thing, if second hand smoke harmed people, everyone over 40 would have friggin lung cancer because 30 years ago, everyone smoked and could smoke in any public place to include. Shopping in a grocery store, K-mart (Ashtrays at the ends of the isles) its just nuts what the lentil eating nuts are getting away with these days!

I think it stinks, gives me a slight headache and makes me a little dizzy. I think it is gross and detracts from society as a whole. However I don't think it should be banned because we would have so many unhappy angry pissed off I'm gonna kill you type people if it was banned that I am happy enough that in California you can't smoke inside buildings like grocery stores and other places restarants etc... not this way in most of the rest of the US and abroad, so I have heard anyway.

This is tough to answer. I'm an ex-smoker and I try to avoid the smell not because it stinks but because it reminds me of, "the good ole days" of my time as a smoker. I'd rather avoid that. However, being ostrasized because I was a smoker really bothered me. My arguement against was as simple as sticking your face into the tailpipe of your car. You breath that crap when you step outside your home everyday. Look at the crap that pollutes the air around you, besides smokers, and really think about how healthy it is. I suppose that if you live out in a rural area where the level of pollution is very small, I can understand the desire to keep it clear and clean but to pass this kind of regulation in a big city is pure hypocrasy.

We shouldn't ban smoking in public places because the general public is far too fond of cancer (from second hand smoke).

I am an ex-smoker. When I did smoke, I almost never did it in a restaraunt 'cause I couldn't stand smelling other people's 2nd hand while I ate. I especially couldn't understand why the non-smokers were forced to go through, or past the smoking area to get to the non-smoking area.

Though I'm all against legislation designed to protect us from ourselves, such as laws against smoking un general and seatbelt laws, I do believe I have a right not to be forced into a harmful environment due to other's habits. If you can't wait to get away from non-smokers, and feel the right to smoke in their presence, you are one arrogant b@stard.

Because those of us who do not smoke have the right to breathe clean air in public places. When I am in California, going out at night is a much better experience due to the lack of smoking. I also feel much better in the morning. When I am in my home city, the worst part is waking up with that smoke smell all over me, my clothes and even my bed if I did not shower before bed.

We should, because reasonable people don't want to inhale somebody elses chemically induced smoke. That is why.
