It's painfully simple. Right at the beginning of the film you see through the blurry eyes of somebody lowering onto a pillow. You are then in 'Betty''s dream. In the dream, she is an upcoming starlet who eventually finds no end of success. She also finds 'Rita', who becomes completely dependant on her and consequently falls in love with her. The second half of the film is 'Betty''s reality. Her real name is Diane and she is a depressed alcoholic struggling actress who 'Rita' has abandoned for the film director. Basically its about the cheapness and fickle reality of high society and how it can hang you out to dry. There's a load more to it than that but watch it again now and it should make a lot more sense!!

Miss B is absolutely right as far as i'm concerned. The give away for me is the 'over happiness' of the old folk at the beginning and the 'too niceness' of certain situations in the first half - these are familiar lynch traits, (the very end scene of Blue Velvet for instance) - this is clearly 'the dream', the second half is the grim reality. the Blonde in the 2nd half is the same girl as the first half except this is how she really is, hence the different actress, who is slightly less glamorous looking, less 'hollywood', everyone else is the same throughout - remember as you rewatch it that the 1st half is how she would have liked things to turn out, and the 2nd half is what actually happened - also rememeber that its a tale of someones descent into madness so there are some weird things happening!
although i admit this doesnt answer everything, there are a lot of what appear to be red herrings and asides, but thats what makes this a more interesting film than say Memento or Usual Suspects where the twist is all you get.
The above mentioned Lost Highway seems to have been Lynch working towards Mulholland Dr, but the result didnt quite add up in the same way - Lynch himself admits this in an interview on the DVD, where he talks about being really pleased that the logic of Mulholland Dr came together in a way that some of his other films don't.

I think it just points out how a place like Hollywood and ambition and hypocrisy can hurt or change a person, this girl arrives from a simple city, she is innocent and wholesome and she ends up being a an alcoholic lesbian in love with someone who just used her until she finds someone more convenient to her ambitions , like the movie director , she dumps her, and she starts to drink and feeling that everyone can see her failure, that is why the same old couple that shared the cab with her and cheered her on, as she told them of her plans to become an actress, come back to mock her, they are tiny to make the point that no matter how well you hide or how well you close the door people get through to laugh at you, and that girl she and her lover find dead in an apartment is just like how she ends up and that means that the story repeats itself with all the "starry eyed" innocent people that arrive and are naive, this girl had a great chance, her famous aunt recommended her, had an audition, got an offer but chose to get involved with the lesbian.. I just saw it once maybe I have to see it again because I read very good reviews about the storyline and the director.

If you watch movies and expect them to have a Hollywood structure - ie very predictable - then I can understand why you don't get this movie.
The whole idea behind the movie is to make you think. And unfortunately there are very few movies that do this.
I really liked the movie, and the fact that David Lynch is challenging what we term as "Makes Sense" makes it all the more interesting to watch.
Rather than watching "Mulholland Drive" another six times, you should have a look at "Lost Highway" and "Eraserhead" as well. They are both very good, and will provide lots of exercise for your grey matter...

specific... you may tell the "clever" ones via sitting through a action picture and critiquing it afterwards for this reason. The no longer so clever ones are people who in simple terms decide for reason there acquaintances say that's the "cool" ingredient to do and that they persist on speaking and texting throughtout the completed action picture. greater approximately putting out then staring on the action picture. The "clever" visitors would be open to the possibility of something outdoors there commonplace action picture kind, going to a autonomous action picture or a documentay as against in simple terms popular video clips that they like. Wheras, the non clever individual will in simple terms pass to pass the boredom of two hours and what sounds to be the excellent one among that factor. they gained't wait for the action picture they think of its reliable. they only happen on the theatres, test the titles, look on the time and say ..."THAT ONE..." do no longer even care if one is greater desirable over the different. basically a fan well-known and it suits into their time slot. Now this would possibly not be the form of answer you're searching for, yet with this subject remember, it opens the doorways to all varieties of solutions and theories. i think of that different "pretend" visitors are people who declare that that action picture is there well-known and ask a question, whilst they understand finished properly that they might discover it on IMDB or the internet themselves. Espeially to whilst a action picture comes out or who's in a definite action picture. it can not be that perplexing. in the event that they might positioned up questions, then i'm specific that they might perform google.
