Iron-on works, but doesn't stand up to much use or laundering.
Embroidery is where quilts is at! Takes a lot of time and patience, though.
I'm in between, I paint T-shirts (and other fabrics) with acrylic paints and do plenty of lettering. The paint lasts very well and looks like silk screening. It does take some concentration, what I do is make a size pattern on paper and letter on the fabric with soft pencil first so I know where to paint. That way I can concentrate on not dribbling. It's also good to cut a hole in a piece of cardboard to cover the area, that way you don't have to worry about disasters.
If you are lettering a patch of cloth before sewing it into the quilt, then you can make your pattern with dark pen and put it under the fabric. It will show through in bright light and act as a guide. That's how I do T-shirts.

Hmm...that is an excellent idea by the way...

The only thing I can think of is to buy that "iron-on" paper. That way you can print off the words onto the paper, and then iron it onto the fabric. Just like you were making a T-shirt.

I'm not sure of any way to do it. If you figure it out, let me know, I think i'd like to try that!

You can buy fabric sheets that are made to go through your inkjet printer. They hold up much better than iron on transfers. Most sewing and craft stores carry them, but be sure to read the package instructions before buying to be sure it meets your needs. Some require heat setting, while others cannot be washed.

Check at a local crafts store, I believe they make something for
this that you iron on. I think the heat from the iron transfers it to
the material. Hope this helps.
