Human nipples appear in the third or fourth week of development, well before the sex characteristics. (The sex hormones start to assert themselves at seven weeks.) As many as seven pairs of nipples are arranged along either side of a "milk line," a ridge of skin that runs from the upper chest to the navel. --CECIL ADAMS

While only females have mammary glands, we all start out in a similar way in the embryo, the authors explain. The embryo follows a female template until about six weeks, when the male sex chromosome kicks in.

Men, however, have already developed nipples.

Oh my gosh, some of these answers are so pathetic, I wonder why people even try. If you dont know an answer to a question, leave it alone. Having said that...the true reason men have nipples is that ALL embryos are female when first develping. It isnt until the 3rd month of gestation that fetal sex is determined. Probably not what you want to hear, but the truth nonetheless.

I asked my Daddy that same question, not in those words, though. We grew up on a farm, and of course you see things at a very young age, and this calf was born and Daddy checked it to see if it was a little bull or heifer. It was a bull, but it had the girl parts too ! and I asked WHY? and he just kinda' said something about humans being the same way, and I some how "got it".

We all start out as female in the womb, and add on the male parts later in the gestation process. That's just the way mother nature does it. I guess the gene sequencing is more efficient that way, rather than having a whole different gene template for males, we both come from the same one.

Without Nipples the Male Chest Looks Strange. The nipples provide a focus point for the male chest. They direct the eye to the curve of the pectoral muscle.

men have nipples so that when a girl gets pissed at them we have something to bite, scratch, or twist to cause them the ultimate pain. :D
