Should it be compulsory to wear them in a car, or should everybody be allowed to decide for themselves?

And what about crash helmets for riders of motorbikes - compulsory or optional?

I think seat belts should be compulsory for the young ones because it keeps them from wandering all over the vehicle and they are so much safer and we want our babies to be as safe as possible. But us oldies should have a say so. I do wear a seat belt because my auto insurance will pay double death benefits to my survivors is I get killed while I have it on. Same with helmets. Youngster should not be on motorcycles anyhow and the rest of us should have a say so.

I think we have to require them! I know they have saved my life at least twice. I won't start the car without my seat belt fastened as well as my children's in the back!

Also, I was in India last summer. I saw many many people riding without helmets. I would see entire families driving on the highway on a bike. Little babies and toddlers between the legs of their father's driving the motorcycles while the mother sat side saddle on the back. I heard tales of women just falling off the back and with no helmets, dying instantly. The traffic is so crazy there. I can't imagine why this hasn't been required. *sigh* I'm all for safety restrictions for all moving vehicles!!

I don't trust seats belts and never have. Seems strange that they have only provided statistics on people who have not been killed wearing them but not on those that were killed by them. Personally I think it should be a personal choice. I do agree with crazy nana on the use of them for kids.

Helmets for motorcyclists is an entirely different thing. Head injuries are a common fact in an accident on a motorcycle. Something like this makes sense to make a person wear them but our gutless politicians won't.

A combination of both of these are an excellent example how screwed up our legal laws are today, but don't expect anything to change until the voting public finally wakes up and starts voting for the right person for the job but most are complelled to vote strictly party line and then piss and moan about who is elected into office and all that happens is that we just get people in office that are more worthless with each election.

Helmets for motorbikes - optional.
Seat Belts - They are compulsory where I live.If you get caught not wearing one, you get a hefty fine!!! (and I agree, I think it should stay this way!)

Yes they should be compulsory, as should motorcycle helmets. You do have a right to endanger yourself but as a society you are going to cost us more with serious injuries than if you had been restrained.

should be the law to wear in a car. I think if ppl are dumb enough not to wear a helmet on a motorcycle/bike whatever... they deserve whatever pain that is inflicted upon them.

Here's my take:
Of course adults should buckle-up their children, but when their kids start driving on their own and are too stupid to put their seat belts on then maybe they should die. It's called survival of the fittest, and if you're too stupid and lazy to pull the damn strap across your chest then I'm not going to feel an ounce of sorrow when you die.

We have to wear them here in NC or we get a 250 fine

both should be mandatory, but as far as helmets go, if someone is dumb enough to ride a motorcycle without one, it might be best for them to be eliminated from the gene pool anyway! ;o)
