Until recently i believed that Mount Blanc on the French/Swiss border was the highest peak in Europe, although some websites claim it is Mt Elbrus in Russia, near the Gorgian border. The confusion seems to be whether this area is in Europe or Asia.

I have consistantly heard that MT Elbrus is, in fact, the highest peak in Europe.

I think it's on the European side of the Caucasus so Mt Elbrus is the highest mountain in Europe

Mt Blanc is the 2nd highest peak at 4,807 meters and is also the highest in western europe and in the alps.
