It depends on what you are comparing it to. If you mean using General MIDI synths, then of course they can't replicate the sound of a performance of the "real" instruments. If you're just using a bunch of electronic gear anyway, then MIDI allows solo performers to have a good degree of control... but see also VST or JACK.
