I'm partially blind
But I would rather be blind and partially deaf because I would still hear enough that I could have a conversation with someone. I also know some Braille so that would make me literate.

I am both partially sighted and severely deaf. I have completely deaf and completely blind friends. Both are very debilitating and greatly affect your life in so many ways... simple things that ordinary people take for granted can be extremely difficult for people with a disability. Imagine going to a meeting and not being able to understand anyone. Imagine going shopping and not being able to see anything. If I had to choose between the two, I would say I would rather be Deaf. Not to belittle it, but I love Deaf culture and if you are Deaf you can still drive, walk down the street, see your friends across the road and lead a fairly independent life. If you are blind, you will need things read out for you or put in braille (which is extremely difficult to learn) you will need an assistant in the shops and a cleaner in your house, you will always be very reliant on other people. I hate being reliant on other people at all and whilst being Deaf does have many problems (need notetakers / interpreters for interviews / college and text phones) you can still acheive a high level of independence and there are still a lot more things you can do in life that blind people can't.
PS Ozzysheep - Deaf people have dogs too. I have a Hearing Dog.

I have been deaf for most of my life. So being deaf is normal to me, I have not missed out anything in life and I am doing an access course so that I can go university to become a social worker. Yes I do use sign language. If I went blind that is some thing I would have to live with and learn the blind deaf language, which is a little bit harder to do. This could have been typed in BSL but you would not understand what I have written. I lead a pretty normal life, and do the normal things that any non-disabled person does.

Given the choice, I'd go for the deaf choice ....and I'm really not sure why!
When I sat and thought about this and before I started to answer, I was going to say 'blind' for reasons I had, in part, while attempting to learn the BLS (British Sign Language) a few years ago (it‘s a long story).
Additionally, I have some hearing loss and my experience has been that in spite of my 'INFORMING THE PERSON ON THE OTHER END OF THE PHONE,' in general, it has ‘’NO EFFECT AT ALL,‘’ either on their speech (enunciation) or their volume.
There are a number of (some funny, others quite un-funny) stories relation to the experiences of being deaf, many relating to their experiences with the Medical world (and to ‘Doctors’ themselves), and in how many people in society seem to react to someone who is a deaf and treat them as being ’ignorant’ or ‘stupidly dumb,’ and are related to and treated with a negative prejudiced attitude.
Regarding the other choice: People who are ‘blind’ (and there are levels of ’blindness’), it is generally and often quite evident just what the persons disability is, and what their limitations are. As such, for some reason, society seems to be often much more open and helpful to them.
In the end, going for 'deaf' leaves one able to get about much more easily that when blind, allowing a freedom and level of autonomy which is greater than when blind. (as I understand it)

Deaf, for sure. Some 80% of data is taken in by ones sight, so it is obviously important. And, given what one is subjected to as sound today, perhaps deaf would not be all that bad....
A secondary reason is that of Karma. Blindness has an exceedingly heavy negative Karma associated with it. Deaf is also due to some heavy Karma, but not nearly the degree of negativity associated with it.

Deaf and partially Blind.
I went to college to learn sign language (something to do over the winter) and it was fantastic.
But not to be able to see the sunrise or a smile would finish me off.
Deafness and Blindness can be assets though, especially in this
troubled world!

I WOULD CHOOSE DEAF, REASON YOU CAN LEARN SIGN LANGUAGE AND FEEL VIBERATIONS BUT IF YOU BLIND HOW YOU GONNA LOOK AT ALL THE PRETTY WOMEN AND HOW YOU GONNA SEE TO GO TO THE MALL TO SEE THE WOMEN? IF YOU ARE BLIND YOU CAN'T GO AROUND FEELING OF PEOPLE TO SEE HOW THEY ARE SHAPED OR YOU GONNA GET SLAPED A LOT. I HOPE YOU GET THE PICTURE NOW.
