To think logically and to communicate requires math and english.
Science is an advanced progression of logical thinking and communication.
I think an intelligent understanding of science is essential to anyone who wants to consider themselves educated. Life decisions regarding scientific questions should never be made by people who don't have a math, english and science background.

In Texas it is considered a "core" subject. That has not always been the case, however. I have taught science for almost 30 years and have seen the science graduation requirements increase from 2 to 3 and now to 4 classes of science. I am biased of course, being a science teacher, but I believe a basic knowledge of one's environment, one's self, and the physical world around them makes for a more well rounded person who can make better decisions.
