the correct term for this race is caucasian
caucasians can include many middle easterners, mediterraneans, north Africans and Europeans as well
the race is thought to have developed in the eastern mountain range of the same name
my husband is "Latin American" by ethnicity (according to US surveys) but he has blue eyes, light skin, and dark hair...he may have some Native American in his family tree, but he looks white and sounds Latino, so all these labels are very irritating to him

Very very good question. I am 100% italian. My grandparents and my father are from the area of Naples. But on my mothers side, my grandmother is from the area of Genoa. She is very light skinned and blue eyed. Here in America, although I am not the typical blond blue eyed girl, I am considered white. Even though I look very italian. Some say I even look greek. So, my race is white but my ancestry is italian. All my kids look very American. All but one has blond hair and blue eyes. There's only one that has dark hair and brown eyes.

"White" people would have originated from the European countries....so English, German, Italian, Polish, Russian, Swedish, Portuguese all these. Someone from Latin America who has ancestors from Spain would be categorized as "white".
Though Italians and Portuguese and Greeks would be called Mediterranean.

I've seen race questionnaires that come with job applications that will differentiate between whites and hispanics. (i.e. white (not of hispanic origin))
Immigrants come in waves, and every generation in America has immigrant groups to deal with. When Italians or Swedes came into the US in big number, they formed their own community and culture, creating the division themselves just as much as natural born americans did. As the newcomers assimilated, we forgot about their ancestry.

Whites are those descended from the Caucasoid Mountain people of the Urals. After the great migration, caused by the lack of deer meat and cold climates brought on by the eclipse of Saturn with Jupiter, the Caucasoid Mountain People came to what is now known as Europe but what then known as "Great land of fresh smelling winds and flowers of the sun."
There they sprouted a great civilization, which spread to all corners of the land, from The Land of Bad Food (Norway), Aydrinkathepub (Great Britain) to Puismell (France) and Nosensahumor (Germany) and that is how the Great White Race came about.

The white people all originate from Europe, and some Slavic nations that are in Asia. All white people have some Anglo/Saxon lineage or scandinavian. Some European countries are mixed with middle east or african like the mediteranean areas and southern Europe, but it's their Anglo/saxon scandinavian lineage that makes them white.

Think anyone of predominantly European descent... sometimes includes light toned people from the Middle East, and sometimes even light skinned Asians depending on who you ask. Quite the subjective term, really.
