More insulation in walls and roof. Peak vents and end vents in roof. Double pane windows with xenon between the panes, get the water heaters that heat the water as you need it--not the 40 gal tanks. Iy you want to get "futuristic" you could put in a backyard windmill. Now they cost about 10,000 bucks but they make 30-90% of your energy (go to windenergy.com).
