what exactly is it that they do that makes them so annoying (and deadly)?

The mosquito's bite is more than just sticking her needle into our skin and sucking out blood. The mosquito's mouthparts are actually very complex. The biting and drinking apparatus is combined into one part, the fascicle. In the image at right, this is the brown colored tube running straight into the human's skin. The fascicle is covered when not in use by a labium, which is visible in the image as the bent object emerging just below her head1.

The fascicle is made of two parts: the cutting stylets, and the two tubes1. The stylets cut into the flesh and tube draws the blood out. The stylets break the skin, allowing the fascicle to enter. The fascicle fishes around for a venule or an arteriole, attempting to pierce it, promoting bleeding. Every time the mosquito pierces the skin (she might do it several times, in order to find the blood), she will dribble some of her saliva in the wound2. This is what is so problematic about mosquitoes.

The saliva does promote bleeding, which is the main object of the exercise. However, it also usually causes an allergic reaction, resulting in the familiar bug bite. The saliva may also carry passengers with it, including various nematodes and viruses. The nematodes will emerge from the mosquito, often hiding in the labia, and when the insect has finished feeding and withdraws, they will follow the little bit of blood into the pinprick wound. Infection, and possibly death, will follow1.

Our attempts at controlling mosquitoes also meet with very little success. The greatest success ever had with mosquitoes was while using the insecticide DDT, which aided in the elimination of malaria and yellow fever in the United States. Unfortunately, DDT was shown to reduce survival in many bird species, and mosquitoes were evolving resistance. In the end, the mosquito emerged unscathed, and malaria is even making a comeback1. It is hoped that the recent decoding of both mosquito and malaria genomes will allow for a better understanding of the resistance to insecticides and antimalarial drugs3.

They carry deadly blood-borne diseases including malaria and West Nile virus. The itching doesn't even really enter into it.

That annoying high-pitched buzzing they do in your ear when you're trying to sleep certainly makes them prime targets for a squashing!
