I have just started college as a full time student; however i also wanted a part time job,but havent been able to find one anywhere, and i dont really think i have time for one (as i wouldnt really be able to chose the hours)

So, i was thinking what i could do instead, and i came up with this idea. I thouht i could advertise in the local paper, and shop, that i will do peoples ironing - they drop it around my house, and i can iron it for them say at 50p an item and deliever it back the next day / a few days. What i was woundering, is do you think this would be a good idea, i feel it would be a good idea because i could chose the hours i worked, which would be perfect to fit around college. Also do you think it would be popular; i would think so, as alot of people dont have time for ironing, and its cheaper apparently then what the laundrettes charge.

Let me know what you think! Cheers!!!

loads of people use ironing services and it is a very good way to make money - go for it. You might want to charge different prices for different items - shirts are a lot more work.

Most people I know buy wrinkle free and permanent press fabrics, or take their clothes to the dry cleaners. You can give it a try to see if you get enough business. Some things to consider are that you have a clean home to do the ironing in because odors will be absorbed by the clothing. And you don't want dust, dirt, fried food smells and residue, cigarette smoke or roaches to contaminate the clothing. Also, charge more than .50c per item. Shirts and blouses can take five or more minutes per shirt, and if you ruin someone's clothing, you'll have to pay for replacing it. Some shirts and women's blouses cost hundreds of dollars apiece. You should check the clothing over before you iron it to see if there are any spots, tears, etc. and have the owner sign off on a sheet saying what flaws the garment had when you received it. That way garment owners can't claim later that you ruined their clothing. Good luck.

You obviously are an educated person, so why would you want to do something that's a chore and not a skill ? You must have some hobby you are good at and someone can use. Translation ( in case you know more than 1 language) for instance, writing articles to be published on the web or newspaper or magazines, etc. think of something that would enrich you as well. I mean in terms of experience, not just the money.

Talking of money - as per your plan, lets do some math.
Time to iron 1 peice - avg. 4 min.
Clothes ironed in 1 hr - 15
money earned per hour - $ 7.5

Now work out how many hrs. you need to work to make the amount of money you need, add your travelling time to it and deduct your gas costs from your net profit. Doesn't add up to much, does it ?

Try and think of something else.

That is a fantastic idea. 50p seems like a reasonable price, but I would adjust your price if you found it to be harder than you thought. If that falls through, you might advertise as a typing service. You would charge on a per page basis (probably at least two quid) and present your customers with professional-looking, spell-checked papers. Advertising in the paper may become too expensive, but you should look into it anyway. Another way to advertise that would be just as effective would be to print fliers and post them all over your campus and at places like laundromats, libraries, and dorms. Good luck!

Its a poorly paid job - I don`t think people would pay 50p an item - we have a firm locally who does a proffesional service and charges much less she also collects and delivers. You`d have to do a lot of ironing for little money, would you really have enough time to study?

Folks might just wonder how good a guy would be at ironing ... and are you sure you want to spend any spare time you have around your studies doing other peoples ironing? I would be worried about where my laundry was going to be ironed, where it would be stored etc. I'm probably just more fussy than most, but I'd rather do things myself and know exactly where it's been and what's happened to it.

superb idea! but i don't think you should deliver the ironing. it would save you time and delivering would take a lot of that! i think one or two things will happen: 1) it will be very popular and you'll get swamped to death with ironing! 2) it will take you forever and 3 days to return people's clothes to them if it is popular and 3) give it a try and best of luck to you!

It is a wonderful idea. If you are an indian surely you are from Bihar the great land of Lalu Yadav our most popular Railway Minister who has done wonders to his portfolio. In recognition of his services turning the Railways to profitable venture with many additional facilities to the travellers, he was invited to Indian Institute of Management to spell out the mantra (strategy) of his success. Surely you will also be invited for your genious in the present venture occupying your mind.

My ironing lady used to charge about ten pounds a basket and would hang shirts if hangers were provided. I couldn't have lived without her. People like you are fab, go for it,I hope you are successful. Well done for initiative.10/10

Yes. I hate ironing. I used to take mine out. But .50 each is too cheap. Most people charge .75 a piece.
