How can I start a conversation with someone that I don't know on myspace, without looking like some online mass murderer or weirdo?

Make a comment about their page and you can get a feel for their interests by what is on there myspace page.

Well, if you are actually someone that person would be interested in, they will welcome the attempt at communication. Therefore I assume there is something in their profile which indicates you two would get along together, as opposed to you just thinking she is cute. The answer to your question, is of course, to write something funny about something in their profile. Just something quick and at least mildly clever. When they get your message, they will look at your profile, and if they like it, they will write back, probably saying something or asking a question which would lead to a response from you, thus establishing an avenue of conversation.
If they are not interested, then they will either not write you back, or give you a short and unencouraging reply to be polite.
In summation, be funny and brief in your initial message, and the reply will tell you where you stand. If you are not funny or clever, well, you are screwed.

Just do it... just send them a msg like something like...
Hey, waz up [person's name or myspace name]? how's it going... my name is [your name] and [something related to why you want to chat with that person or become friends with that person on myspace] -> for example, you can say:
... my name is ... and I was just browsing around on myspace and I found your profile and read it... you seem to be a pretty cool person that I could hang out with in person if that was possible... we share [whatever similar interest you have that is in that person's profile]...and was interested if you like to be friends on myspace and chat online from time to time...
OR if it's a girl, and she's beautiful, you could send a shout out to her saying how beautiful and/or sexy she is and say something that you have similar interests with her in her interests/hobbies... so you don't sound like a jerk just saying how beautiful and sexy she looks to someone who doesn't know you and might get shyed away...
in other words, try to make seem nice and pleasant...like what would you say in person if you went up to them for the first time to introduce them and find something general that you can start a conversation on...
sometimes, I talk back and forth a couple of times before I ask if he/she doesn't mind being my friend on myspace... so it depends on the person you are trying to talk with.
