I'm not sure what kind of history your wanting to pull up, but I would check to see if the county (or Parish) clerk's office/county (or Parish) recorder's office has a website for you to obtain records on the building you wish to see. As somebody mentioned they may charge you a small fee, but if it's online most record searches on real estate that are online are free.

A good website that I use at work for a piece of property is: http://www.netronline.com/public_records.htm

All you have to do is click on the state and then select the county. The rest should be pretty simple. But if you need help feel free to e-mail me at mjbuska (at) hotmail dot com.

Your city or county clerk will have the entire purchase history on file. There is almost always a fee to retrieve such files but it's very low (like $6 most places). Also, keep in mind it may take 7 days after your formal request is made in order to retrieve the record.

I would look at the internet and or if the building is history then maybe it has a sign on or by it that says what the history of it is.

I know that some cities or states require architects to file a "purpose statement" for the building. and thats kept on file, so you'll at least get the original design and its purpose.

City directories should also help.
