I have a large old oak in my back yard. It has 2 trunks at the base and is probably about 60ft tall. It has 2 small openings where the trunks come together and for the last 2 summers, there have been carpenter ants in them. I spray like crazy and put any traps....they still survive.
I have read that the ants won't actually kill a tree because they are not EATING it, just moving dead stuff out.
The tree also has a tiny bit of green moss on the bark at the ground level, which I read was a bad sign.
The tree looks perfectly healthy otherwise. Any prognosis? This is our best shade and privacy tree!

Moss is not a bad sign at all. Ants are...check sound of tree by hitting it with baseball bat ( hollow sound ) is dead and also is the bark peeling away ? Is the stuff the ants are bringing out sawdust or wood powder??? again dead or dying.. I would call city arborist and ask them to just drop over when they are doing the rounds for the town or local parks department and they can verify if tree is OK or dead. Oaks are very tough and it takes lots to kill them so act now, and the arborist will advise you how to get ants out and seal areas too, with tar for small areas, or cement and then tar over it for big holes, after the ants are dead or poisoned.

Tell her to look into a psychic network. People will immediately dismiss this as a "mental illness" or whatever but it can be two things, psychic intuition or trauma since you mentioned she's witnessed a car accident. I can completely understand how she feels. In 7th grade I started seeing and hearing ghostly figures at night after 9-11 when I was going through a phase where I cursed and hated God. I wanted to end these experiences and commit suicide myself, but I eventually did research on it and in high school I found out I could do what is called "astral projection". Look, people go through these types of experiences all the time and over the last couple of years research has shown that what her and I are experiencing are being more frequent nowadays. Again like I said, do some research with her to help put her at ease. I can see you care about her, so let her know how difficult it would be for not only you but her family if she left this world so suddenly.

Moss always grows on trees that's how you can tell what direction you are heading if you are lost in a forest. Moss grows on the North side of the tree. Except your Ant problem your tree is fine. The Ants are actually benifical to the tree by carrying out the dead stuff as you said.

If your tree has leaves every year then i would say it will be fine.Moss at the trunk is also normal.Ants can and will over time damage your tree.Ants make channels inside the tree weakening it somewhat.Spraying lots of chemicals to kill the ants may also further damage the tree

the tree is likely rotting from the inside out. As the heart decays it gets weaker. Have the tree checked by tree surgeons. They might be able to clean out the decay and stuff it full of something like a dentist filling a tooth, or it might be best to have the tree down before a windstorm knocks it over onto something like a car or your house.
