Because some states' economies are based on tobacco.
Because alcohol has such a long history and it is a sedative for the people, albeit a dangerous one.

I have pondered this one myself. I think it's MAINLY because both Alcohol makers & tobacco makers are established industries. Where marijuana could easily threaten those industries. Grass gives a bigger kick than tobacco, so if it were legalised then it might be reasonable to consider that tobacco smokers would give it up for marijuanna.
These days, the only way to get a legal high is with alcohol, & other spirits. I know that there are prescription drugs but no doctor is supposed to prescribe them to patients just so they can get high. But if marijuanna was legalised then it would threaten the sales of booze, & at least cut into the profits of distillers everywhere.
It would't suprise me if any bill to legalise marijuanna was presented to the government, that there would be lobyists against it with some kind of ties to both the tobacco, & alcohol industries.

Because it was associated with Mexican immigrants (I have nothing against immigrants, this was how people felt 100 years ago in this country) in the 1920's-30's and because of a power hungry guy named Anslinger.
1937 Cannabis made federally illegal in the US with the passage of the Marihuana Tax Act.
The act is pushed through by former Prohibition Commissioner Harry J Anslinger, now head of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. The American Medical Association and the Oil Seed Institute opposed the law, but were ignored. Anslinger quoted press cuttings as proof that cannabis was "the most violence-creating drug on this planet".
Anslinger used the new law to expand his Bureau. He began an ugly campaign against "demon dope" using films and posters, associating it with jazz "voodoo music", inter-racial sex, madness and death.
Check out a movie titled "Reefer Madness".

It is a standalone drug. Alcohol and tobacco are not. Alcohol and tobacco kill people over time and marijuana makes people stupid real fast depending on their consumption habits.

Marijuana is illegal because teens like it and its not addictive and it would make our government look like asses if they would legalize it because of the whole "War on Drugs".
Marijuana has a bad name because of the government and because of stupid moms and dads who let the government tell them how they should run there lifes and whats good and bad. Marijuana has been call "bad" and "evil" to try and make people not use it, so now these days only the "rebel teens" are using it, and its not like back in the day when our parents were smoking weed, they wern't under the knife.
Tobacco is very addictive and harmful. id say from the people who i know that smoke that its most likey more addictive then heroin and harder to quit. How addictive does something have to be where the choice is life or death. would you rather live to be 80 or die in pain and agony at 40? saddly most hard smokers would say they want to live...but they will die because the addiction is so bad they can't quit.
The best part...THEY ARE LEGAL! so you can't just take someones cigarettes away they will just go buy a new pack
Honestly id rather smoke a J then open a pack of death sticks ive watched people die puff by puff and ive been by to many death beds with a loved one in it would just couldn't drop it.
Ive never seen someone die from Marijuana
Ive never seen someone drive into a child while DUI on THC
The one downfall of marijuana is it damages your lungs...not like the air we breath is any better for us anyways

it's called corruption.
If there had been a multi-billion dollar industry cultivating and distributing the product for 100's of years, before it's negative side effects were known it would be an industry on it's own by now.
Eventually, it may be... or they''ll all be banned.

This is a really good question. It all has to do with what is socially acceptable. The cigarrette and alcohol companies built up power, now its nearly impossble to stop them.
