A farmer had his own collection of zoo animals. When a census asked him how many birds and how many cows he had the farmer replied:

" Well I have 36 heads and 100 feet altogether"

The census takers had to figure out how many of each animal the famer had.

To solve this, we set up a system of linear equations:

We know that there are 36 heads in total, and each animal has one head, therefore the number of cows (c) and the number of birds (b) add up to 36:

b+c=36

we also know that each cow has 4 feet, and each bird has 2. Therefore the number of feet from cows (4c) and the number of feet from birds (2c) add up to 100:

2b+4c=100

we solve these two equations:

2b+4c=100
-2(b+c)=-2(36)
2c=28
or c=14

b+c=b+14=36, so b=22.

There are 22 birds and 14 cows.

There are 22 birds and 14 cows = 36 heads, 22b=44 feet and 14c=56, and 44+56 = 100 feet. So there are 2 feets and 4 feets. 36 heads, so put in 24 for 2 feet and 12 for 4 feet and it is near the answer. This is a guess and check type of riddle.

let x = birds
and y = cows
x + y = 36
2x + 4y = 100
y = 50 - 36 = 14
x = 36 - 14 = 22

Check:
2*22 + 4*14 = 44 + 56 = 100

Let us assume x be the no. of animals and
y be the no. of birds. We have the equations
4x+2y=100....1
x+y=36
2x+2y=72.......2
from 1&2
2x=28
x=14
y=22
verify
14*4+2*22
=56+44=100
ok

let number of birds be b
no. of cows be c
each has one head only:so
c +b =36
and one bird has 2 ft and one cow has 4 ft
so
2b + 4c = 100
solve the two simultaneous equations
c = 56
b = 22
