I hope your HP lptop has a Fn key, next to ctrl key at the lower left corner of the keyboard.
And check f1 to f12 keys. Look for a sign of sun and arrowhead. Upward arrowhead with sun is to increase, and downward is to decrease brightness. These keys are functional when you press them while keeping Fn key pressed.

Try hitting Function (the FN button next to the Ctrl button) and F8.

That's the brightness control on an HP.

Also try this: Right click the Desktop.Choose Properties. Go to the Settings tab. Choose Advanced. Look for a Colors settings or something of the like. You should be able to adjust the brightness / contrast there.

Hope this helps.
