Because women live for approval and need somway to validate themselves on their own. Manufacturers hock their products at them and many believe this will compensate for what they do not have within themselves.

The same reason men do. They're looking for immortatility through "things". Men buy tools they'll never use.......women buy dresses, etc. I've had so many friends die in the last year that I decided its time to get rid of things rather than buy more.

What is useless to some is useful to another. Women have been socialized to believe that objects make them more attractive to the opposite sex. All one needs to do is look at the ad campaigns aimed at a female audience to see how they are flooded with propraganda.
