I'm reading 1984 by George Orwell for the moment and I'm going to watch the film as well. Has anyone read the book and seen the film? Are there many similarities and does it look like the book or not?
And what do you think about the book? I haven't finished it yet, but I love it. It makes you think about our society and all the other things, it inspires you as well.
Thank you for answering!

The movie is a fairly good adaptation of the film - it captures the atmosphere of the big brother world very well. It is dark and brutal in places, which are overtones which I think you get from the book (the visual equivalent of Winston Smith's apartment always smelling of boiled cabbage - which is mentioned early on in the book). Just make sure you are hiding behind your hands when Winston Smith goes into room 101 - in the book it's pretty awful in your imagination - the film captures that too! I first read the book in 1984 - many critics feel that the book is less a futuristic view of the world than a political view of 1948 - the year when it was written - what could happen to the world after the seismic upheaval of the second world war - the rise of communism, and the split of the world into large blocs (Eurasia, Oceania, etc) . Thought provoking!

the books great, the film is not so good, it misses out some of the better parts of the book and under emphasises the differences between the proles and the rest of society, it also ignores the way that war is manipulated to benefit the state.
keep reading the endings the best bit...... remember big brother is watching you......

I have always been dissappointed by film adaptations of books I have loved. 1984 is no exception, especially as, when we watched it in English at school, my christian fundamentalist teacher fast forwarded through the nudity. Swine!

Great book, great message, still relevant.

It depends on which film you are watching - the original film is more like the book - both made me feel very 'uncomfortable'.
