Are you more proud of your country, or more proud of your state? For example if someone asks you "where are you from?" do you reply the United states or your state (e.g. Kentucky, Vermont)?

I see myself as an American first. It would be hard to specify a state - I was born in Alabama, raised in Florida and Tennessee, and worked in Virginia for the last 18 years - and there is good (and bad) in each.

One result of our Civil War (...or the "War of Northern Aggression") was to show what could happen with misplaced governmental loyalties. Events in the last century have given Americans more important things to worry about. Nothing unites like a common enemy.

Well Since my country is called the United States of America.. I'm going to have to go with my country first...your state is only part of your country, it's where you live in your country.. so why wouldn't you be more proud of your country than your state.

If I am talking to someone in a foreign country, I would say "American". Because they may not be famiilar with states.

If I am talking to someone in the United States, I would say "Californian". Or more specifically, "Los Angeles, California".
(Because there would be a good chance that they will ask you the city after you tell them your state.)

Dear Pablo,

I see myself as part of the Confederacy first and foremost. Then I am part of the great state of North Dakota. Then I am part of Germany, then I am part of America.

P.S. For my fellow Americans who posted answers for this question, maybe use the check spelling link next time.

American, most peole these days are far too mobile for work and what not to show pure loyalty to their home state. It was however quite different during the civil war.

American first. If a foreigner asks, I reply USA. If a fellow American asks, I reply with my state.

What weirdos say they're from a state and not a country?

Other than Texans, of course...
