Quitting smoking is a great opportunity to learn about ourselves, as you have already observed.
Congratulation yourself on completing the first week - then you are over the worst, but still need to maintain your resolve. It's just so easy to start thinking that just one won't hurt, but it does. Just one achieves nothing except feeling the need for another. Whatever you do, don't have just one.
Here's a few home-brewed tips that might be useful.
It's not just nicotine addiction - there are 50+ chemicals in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something', which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
We will have a few bouts of feeling or even being short tempered. We must try to bite our lip, and control; ourselves. Recognise the short temper as being the removal of toxins which are trying to find a way out. They went in through the mouth, and they try to get out that way to. We must learn to keep our mouth closed, and force the toxins out the other way.

The best way I could find was to do it, Cold Turkey. I set a day that I was going to do it and then did it. It was rough for the first week but then before long I didn't miss it at all anymore. It has been 10 years and I feel great. My husband did the same thing and he smoked for over 45 years. The key to being able to stop is to really wanting to do so. You have to be motivated and have the willpower to not give in when it gets rough. If you can get through the first few days you will have it made.

I smoked for 38 years , I quit 6 months ago !

When you decide you are going to quit you will . You can't just TRY .

I always knew there was no way I would ever quit . Then one day I just said I had enough . I did use the nicotine gum , but got off that too .

Don't quit quitting. We tried to quit a few different times. We finally quit using the patch and having three of us quit at the same time. It helped that a friend had just died from cancer. maybe visit some of the people in the hospital dying of emphazema or lung cancer and that might scare it out of you.

My aunt used a sort of aversion therapy. Everytime she thought about smoking she popped a hot ball in her mouth, after a while she associated the hot sensation with smoking and now she has been smoke free for almost 20 years.

I've found pranayama breathing from yoga has made me feel so much healthier that smoking completely lost any attraction whatsoever. The effort lies in making the exercise a habit - after that leaving the addiction behind was easy.

Gradually. Set reasonable goals for yourself. Smoke a few less cigarettes each week or each month. Eventually, you will be able to get by with less and less and until you are able to get by with none at all.

It takes a whole lot will power, confidence, and a postive attitude won't hurt you!! Finding other habits to take it place, one being chewing gum. Anything that will work for you!!!
