Why does the Ku Klux Klan burn crosses?
William J. Simmons, the founder of the Klan in its second incarnation (1915-1944), cobbled together a cross and burned it at a meeting of the newly-established Knights of the Ku Klux Klan on Thanksgiving night, 1915, on Stone Mountain near Atlanta. Flaming crosses have been a Klan trademark ever since.

For the intimidation factor. Since the KKK is made up of brain-dead sub-human losers it was probably the best they could do.

But seriously, I have read that burning crosses were used just because they were so frightening. The KKK knew that most of the blacks they were harrassing in the South were devout and a burning cross would be terrifying, and the same went for the Catholics they hated. It would send a different, though equally frightening message to the Jews they hated as well.

These people have a collective IQ of about 50. If you're looking for an esoteric reason, I wouldn't bother.
