Without knowing her age it's hard to say the best method... if she's still a newborn, less than a mth, I agree with the nail biting. My pediatrician told us the same. If she's older though the nails are a bit thicker and can be harder to bite off. What you are doing sounds like the good way - and yes, while she is sleeping is better so she doesnt move around too much. But if she's like my daughter there really isnt too much you can do. Once she got a little older she stopped scratching herself and started scratching mommy instead.... oh well! Still cant break her of the habit at 11mths. She sees a freckle and has a strong desire to see it gone...

Hi Maria,
I have to agree with those who say trim them whilst baby is sleeping, and use nail clippers.
I found that gloves didn't work for my daughter because she could take them off right from birth. I also HAD to cut them every other day as they grew superfast. So, don't be afraid to cut them every day if you need to!
To see if they are still sharp, run your finger around the nail at the angle that would cause your baby to scratch herself. If you find a sharp point, just snip it off with the nail trimmers, and I found that I got a better cut with the trimmers when I held them upside down...with the little clicking lever on the bottom- I was less likely to make her bleed using them this way round too.
It just takes practice, but you'll be cutting like a pro in no time!
Good luck,

I cut my boys nails every weekend and he still manages to scratch his face from time to time, I know a lot of people prefer to bite their childs nails when they are still babies but not sure if it helps

you can buy baby mittens to stop a baby from scratching their faces with their nails, mother care etc..should sell them, they are not very expensive..a nail file may be a bit harsh on delicate nails, so be careful. x

Ive been biting my babies nails for all 3 kids, ages 18,16 and 7 weeks. Some babies hate their hands being held down like that so try to do it while baby is asleep

I always found that with my daughter and i tried various things. I tried nibbling them down myself on my mum's advice, tried baby emery boards, baby scissors but the best thing i found was a pair of very slim nail scissors from boots. they are very small and easy to handle and sharp to the tip so you can just use the tips if you want to. also do it while she's asleep, i did it with my daughter and now she's two she's old enuf to understand she sits still to have her nails cut and doesn't make a fuss like she did when she was small!

Use cotton mittens, or nibble her nails short when she is feeding or asleep. You can buy baby nail scissors that are tiny and do the job better than ordinary nail scissors.

Trim her nails while she is sleeping so you can get them cut better and neater than when she might be wriggling about and use cotton mittens. The midwife told me that I could nibble them off myself - but I was never brave enought for that!
