You absolutely can install tile over linoleum, provide certain conditions exist. The present linoleum should be in good condition (not loose, etc) and only one layer. I've done this several times, and have always gotten great results. First you should thoroughly clean the surface to allow good adhesion for the tile mastic. Then you can start tiling as you would if there was no linoleum. Be aware of the added height for door clearance, and ensure enough clearance to enable you to remove or replace appliances provided you only tile up to the edge of the appliance. (For example, if you have a dishwasher under the cabinet and you tile up to the edge of the appliance, if you had to remove the appliance, you'd have to have the clearance to slightly raise the appliance to pull it out from under the cabinet). It's best to pull the appliances out and tile under if possible. Check the appliances to see if the have height adjusting screws on the bottom. Then you only have to lower the height to allow for the additional tile height.
Two layers of linoleum would result in just too much cushioning. When weight is put on the new tile (heavy furniture, or even walking), the linoleum underneath would probably compress enough to crack the grout , if not crack some of the tiles themselves. But with only a single layer of tile, it should be flat enough with no compression to cause any cracking. It's been five years since I tiled. Not one crack.....

Linoleum is really pretty easy to remove. If you are going to lay the tile yourself, that is going to be one of the easiest steps!

i have heard that you can, but I wouldn't think its a smart idea, the linoleum could crack and ultimately lift the ceramic and that would be more of a nightmare than if you just pulled it up....
