Those poor women don't know any better, they should have had teachers that got paid more to teach them how to live. Down with Bush.

Actually, Cons eliminated the unwed mother stigma when they decided to go anti-abortion. Before that the stigima was so great that women would kill themselves trying to abort, rather than have a baby out of wedlock. You will notice, women did not give up sex out of wedlock back then, and shotgun marriages were fairly common, but if you think that worked out, then you never saw a drunk tank on Saturday night. If you asked me the dissoulution of the American family came at the time it became mandatory for both parents to work in order to afford the idea of a normal middle class life. By that I mean just an ordinary house, car, 2 week vacation at the shore, and paying the bills, maybe dinner out with the kids once a month.
Welfare had nothing to do with intact families since few of them are on welfare anyway. And most welfare families were off in just over a year. Yes there were people in generational welfare, but frankly these were people with no skill sets to get jobs with. Recognizing this, welfare was changed to ecourage obtaining saleable skills. Now our biggest concerns are the increasing lack of affordable health care and prescriptions, and the rising cost of health insurance even for the employed.

Actually the stigma of unwed mothers became a central point in politics because of a Republican...Dan Quayle.

He single-handedly changed the stigma because of the outcry that resulted in his comment about the TV show Murphy Brown. Since then, Democrats took that political opportunity to welcome them as voters and the country has not been the same since.

Nope, nothing to do with welfare.

It's always been something of a stigma to be an unwed mother in the US. Have you read the Scarlet Letter in school yet?

Shiraz, apparently you never got past the first chapter, Hester had a daughter from the affair and raised her by herself on the outskirts of town.

I don't know the "truth detector" but let's take a hypothetical example:

The "truth detector" meets an alluring young girl who, in a world of criticism and degradation from her family, searches for 'love' where ever she can find it. Without too much persuasion, she gives in to the 'truth detector' and he has her way with her. She gets pregnant, and the 'truth detector' skips town, not wanting to assume any responsibility for his part of their "fun".

She's suddenly a single mother with limited income opportunities and awesome adult responsibilities. The 'truth detector' doesn't see how this is in any way HIS fault. After all, he was just 'poking fun' and enjoying himself. Why should he accept any accountability, and why should he have to assume any financial obligation on caring for that newborn child?

So the young girl finds herself alone. Her only choices are: go on welfare or have an abortion. The 'truth detector', meanwhile, is out seducing some other young, nubile waif who also is starved for affection and attention.

Better that we spend billions of dollars on helping those in need than spending billions of dollars on an illegal, immoral, unjust 'war' in Iraq. But, of course, the conservative 'truth detector' won't see it that way. He'll plunder his way through as many vulnerable young women as he can before eventually ending up as a member of Congress and seducing fine young women behind the secure locked doors of his lavish Capitol Hill office.

I'm against welfare but how did it caused the dissolution of the American family? I don't see how being unwed mother is the fault of any lib or con.

The corruption of liberalism led to the management of fake leaders like Jackson and Sharpton, who race bait, blame white people for short comings of minorities and don't emphasize that unfavorable people don't have babies they are able to't arise with the funds for. Jessie and Al won't tell their people to be self protecting, confusing working, trustworthy and be liable for their very own strikes. Abort all you prefer socialist, there are a extensive sort of people who oppose socialism and are not getting hung up on your abortion project. For me, i think of abortion is a vulgar and extreme sort of beginning administration yet its not my place to tell every physique else, no rely if or not they must have an abortion.
