If you are referring to the "Check Engine" light in your vehicle, it is letting you know that the engine computer has detected something abnormal in the emission control system. Abnormal means something is not/did not work correctly. If the light starts flashing, it is indicating that whatever the problem is, it may possibly cause damage to the engine or the emission control system of your vehicle.
Many people panic at the presence of a warning light. Its job is to warn you that something needs to be checked AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. It does not mean that your car will explode into a fiery ball, or that the engine is going to fall apart on your way home from work.
If ignored long enough you could be spending a lot of money on repairs and extra fuel use. My advice (I am and have been a Mechanic and a service manager) would be to take it to a reputable shop (one that knows what they are doing with the scanner) and have your vehicle checked or scanned. If they have a scanner it doesn't mean they know what to do with it. I am not discrediting anyone but have worked at a few places where a car gets scanned a few parts get replaced (you're paying for it) and it's out the door, if it's not fixed, well, you get to come back and they continue the process until it is fixed, most of the time costing you a lot more money than necessary. Unless you already have a trusted mechanic, ask/check around before just taking it to the nearest garage.
You could purchase a scanner or even have (some parts store chains offer free scanning) the scan done at a parts store. This is all fine and good until you ask them what the found code means. Don't expect to find an answer other than "This little book here says it's the XXX system." Contrary to popular belief there is a lot more to OBD and Emission control systems other than finding a numbered problem on a code chart and replacing a part. Things like a loose gas cap, overfilled fuel tank, a dirty air filter, a loose/bad plug wire, are the common ones but there are hundreds of DTC's (Data Trouble Code) which your car can encounter. The codes are indicative of system errors (systems consist of more than one component) so the person who does the scan, ideally, needs to be familiar with this in order to be of any help to you.
Good Luck!

It means that there is something wrong with the emissions control system on your car. You'll need to get it sorted out before your next MOT.

it means there is a trouble code popping up in the computer, get a code scanner and find out what it is. It could be low water or even a loose gas cap :)
