Here are three reasons why community service is important:
1) You build connections. When something goes down and you need help, you'll have relationships in place that will serve as resources to get you what you need. If you haven't done that, then you risk being vulnerable in difficult times.
2) It reduces crime because it gives those who need help and cannot provide it for themselves a resource. When the community takes care of all its members, people don't have to resort to such drastic measures when they know they can count on their community.
3) It bonds an individual with the larger group in which they're a part of and gives them a sense of belonging. The sense of belonging is crucial to being a well-adjusted human being.

First of all, yes, it is important. Even more important, however, is looking like you have incentive and creativity. Admissions committees aren't just reading off a checklist (at least at good schools they're not), but are looking at your application to see if you seem to be a hard working, intelligent, creative and independent person. If you dutifully put in your 100 hours of community service at the local soup kitchen it certainly won't hurt, but it would be much, much better if you started something novel of your own. Is there a problem that needs to be solved in your town? Can you think of a way to organize people to address it? In general, you want to do things that will make your application novel and interesting, not just longer. Good luck!

Community Service Learning is first and foremost a form of pedagogy; a series of techniques, philosophies and actions that combine to create an especially effective learning environment. Students who have the opportunity to be involved with CSL experience a greater depth of learning by interacting with course materials, their colleagues and their community in a fundamentally different way than in the traditional classroom setting.
