Hi,
It'll be really nice if you can visit some office/store/supermarket and observe the kind of systems they are using. Java is recently catching up as one of the strongest languages for Enterprise applications.
While it may be impossible for you to build an entire ERP on your own, you can aim at developing a small part or module of it. For e.g. you might want to build the "Product Order" module where you can take care of suppliers, their details, product categories, pricing etc.
Try and add features like enabling your application to send e-mails. It'll obviously need to interact with the databse. Use MySQL/Oracle.
Use J2EE for a web based application. If you're more comfortable with core java, then I suggest that you opt for Java Swings.
Remember.. Java is one of the most powerful languages around.. try and make the most of it ;)
