Although there are no federal penalties for infringing the US Flag Code, it is, in my opinion, disrespectful to do so. 36USC 171 states that the flag should not be used as wearing apparel. I think what this tries to say is that it is acceptable to wear a motif or small emblem on clothing but not to have clothing itself made out of a representation of the flag

I don't think it is, but there certainly is a decorum that the military is taught and the citizens don't tend to know about. For example, Abby Hoffman wore a diaper made from a flag when he went to court in the 60s. While I don't think that was specifically illegal, it was considered contempt of court and that can get you thrown in jail. I have a spring jacket that looks like the American Flag. I really like it and enjoy wearing it. I've had some elderly vets tell me that they don't feel comfortable seeing someone wearing a flag and I respect the opinions of others. Now is the jacket the same as a diaper? Probably not. How about compared to a lapel pin? I see members of Congress, here in DC, wear flag pins all the time. I think "intent" has something to do with it all, but sure there's a line somewhere.

Not as long as you don't cut up the flag to make your clothes. I have several shirts that have the American flag on them. To me it shows that I love my Country. If it were displayed in a disrespectful manor that would be a different story.
As for ruth's comment every Scout shirt DOES have and American flag on the sleeve. I have two kids in scouts.

Yes. Technically, it is a violation of law. Yes, there are US laws on the proper display of the flag. But ANY clothing made of the flag is also a violation of the law...
Every cub scout learns this...
Yes, and the flag on the sleeve is PROPERLY displayed, according to the law (the purpose is so there is always a flag to salute, even when camping in the wilds)...
I have one in Webelos and have been den leader for 3 years...

I don't think it is disrespectful at all to wear something with the American flag on it. I am proud to be an American and I am also proud to wear clothes with the American flag on it.
