Good reference photos are important, I am an artist too and nothing is entirely made up. Every creature you create has some characteristics in common with a real life creature. I can draw from my imagination but that is because I draw from life a lot. That's what you should do draw and draw a lot and draw everything and eventually you will train your hand to draw what you see in your head.

In my experience, drawing works as a skill to translate the picture you already see in your mind. If your hyopthetical artist had the correct skills, but no prior knowledge then I don't think they could draw what you know as the inside of an elevator for example, but what they do draw would still look really good. How you even explain to the artist to draw something they've never seen is another problem entirely.

One of the better ways is to draw what you feel. Start with moving the pencil around just above the paper. Then come down on the paper where you feel comfortable to start. Oncew you get the first line on the paper, the rest is a piece of cakeThis is how I learned. I have come up up with some wild designs from my weird mind.

Everything real or imagined has a shape or you couldn't draw it.
You need to practice drawing the basic shapes in two and three dimensions.
Draw what you want.
Combine them in any way, as long as it's what you want and you will find that you "will" be drawing from your imagination! Then practice more!

There are books that help you draw superheroes, fantasy people and fantasy animals/monsters. You can get them in a library or a book store. Check out covers of science fiction books and fantasy books. They have wonderful art.

There was a game a friend taught me he would draw a scribble and then you had to make it into something by adding to it. It really pushed you to be creative.
