The US, Britain and the USSR all played a part but the turning point, when Germany began to lose the war happened in Stalingrad. If the Germans had won and made it to Russia's oilfields the war would have dragged on much longer. Russia dug in and suffered more than any other nation during WWII. If any country is credited with winning the war it should be Russia.

The fact that the Russians entered the war giving an Eastern front on top of the Allies attacking from the south and west did the most to end WWII.

Yeah it was a team effort, but in my humble opinion, the fate of the second world war was decided by the outcome of Operation Barbarossa.....

A decisive role was played by the USSR, USA, and Britain. THE decisive roll was played by the USSR, go ask its 20 million dead.....

Just to give you an idea of battle deaths on both sides check these out:

EASTERN FRONT:
Stalingrad: 1.8 million
Siege of Leningrad: 1.5 million
Moscow 1941-42: 700,000
Smolensk 1941: 500,000
Kiev 1941: 400,000
Vorenesh 1942: 370,000
Belarus 1941: 370,000
2nd Rzhev-Sychevka: 270,000
Caucasus 1942: 260,000
Kursk: 230,000
Lower Dnieper: 170,000
Kongsberg: 170,000
Rostov: 150,000
Budapest: 130,000
and others with less killed

Whereas on the Western Front
Battle of France 180,000
Normandy: 132,000
El Alamein: 70,000
Battle of the Bulge: 38,000

The USSR - something like 10% of their population died. Had Hitler not broken the non-aggression pact and left the Soviets out of the war, he would have won.

Eric T is wrong, wrong, wrong to say Canada only joined after Japan attacked them. Canada entered just a few days after Britain declared war on Germany, and was never attacked by Japan.

Much depends on how you define "winning."

In terms of lives lost -- the Russians/USSR. More Russians died than in all the other Allied nations combined.

In terms of hanging in there until the rest of the world decided this was really war -- the British.

In terms of throwing more bullets, bombs and machines at the Axis until they were finally overwhelmed -- the Americans.

The codebreakers at Bletchley Park. All the post-war assessments were that without them, it would have taken a couple of years more. Some of the assessments were that, without them, the U-boats would have got the upper hand in the Atlantic in 1943 and cut off Lease-Lend shipments, which would have meant curtains.

Tears well up in my eyes when I think of the Battle of Britian. The Brits did a great job. So much is owed to so few.
The Soviets did a good job of sending ill-trained and under supplied men to slaughter.
FDR is the greatest president we ever had, and to this day I wish we had him now. G. W. can onl;y dream of having his foresight and understanding of human plight.

The United States of American (Americans) and Great Britain. Russias involvement, although not an ally of USA or GB, was a major assist through its distraction and overextension of Germany.
