Cute idea to be a pumpkin and here's an easy and cheap way to do it. In crafts stores, they sell the garbage can sized plastic bags that look like pumpkins. Just cut a hole in the top, slip it over you, cut holes for the arms and stick your legs through the bottom. Vala, pumpkin!

I used felt, hot glue and yarn and it came out really cute. If you want it to be a bit "puffy" cut out 4 pcs for the pumpkin and stuff a bit with polyfil. Made a hat as if it were cut out of the top of the pumpkin. Run the yarn down the pumpkin for 3-d "creases" Make the pumpkin as if were a sandwich board you wear on your shoulders with ties at the side. You can also use velcro. This was a quick and easy project.

I liked the sweatshirt idea - I did it when I was pregnant the first time. Purchased some fake leaves and put them around my ponytail and called it good. My daughter has a pumpkin costume that is more like an orange poncho with the jack-o-lantern on the front. Both easy and cute ideas!

Right, they tend to look cheesy.
Pumpkin costumes are tough because it's so hard to keep them filled out. If you do manage to make a frame that does not sag, you have other problems in the areas of sitting and getting through doors.
I think pregnant bellies are cute and I think I am not alone. You should be able to pull off something with body paints on your bare belly, with greenery above and below. I think a local tattoo store can do body painting or put you in touch with an artist.
Send me a picture :)

I assume you can sew; check the pattern books at a fabric store, most have costumes and pumpkins are usually included.
