Iraqis call for five-man junta to end the anarchy
Marie Colvin

IRAQ’S fragile democracy, weakened by mounting chaos and a rapidly rising death toll, is being challenged by calls for the formation of a hardline “government of national salvation”.
The proposal, which is being widely discussed in political and intelligence circles in Baghdad, is to replace the Shi’ite-led government of Nouri al-Maliki, the prime minister, with a regime capable of imposing order and confronting the sectarian militias leading the country to the brink of civil war.
..Last week Iraqi officials estimated that up to 100 people, mostly civilians, were being murdered every day.
Any suspension of the democratic process would be regarded as a severe blow to American and British policy.

You Say ...In the long run, a democratic state in Iraq and the region is the most positive possible outcome of the recent situation, regardless of the loss of life."

"regardless of the loss of life" is that what you said? what you believe?
I'd suggest you would not think the same way if the deaths were on U.S. soil.

Democracy doesn't work, if the people don't want it.

I think we have tried hard enough, if it hasn't worked now, it won't.

I say get out and if they are worried about Iran trying something with Israel, then send our troops to hang out in Israel.

I think our military people would be happier in Israel than in Iraq.

Democracy has a process. People have to grow into it. It is not a penicillin shot that takes care of all the bacterial infection in the body. It is more like a viral flu that you just have to sit and wait until it has run its course. When you don't give people enough time to gradually grow into a social change what you end up with is chaos. You don't agree with me, look at the years after French Revolution or Russian Revolution. We keep making the same mistake and want to change a bad situation too fast and we only make the situation worse. To reach a true democracy you have to educate people until they, themselves realize that they need it. What we did in Iraq was forcing people to accept a concept which is totally new to them. Think of it for a second, if someone tells you that from now on you have to live this new way of life that you have no clue what it is, won't you react?

First of all. we aren't losing anything. You must recognize the fact that the insurgents are simply keeping us busy with their suicide bombings. True, we are suffering casualties from this, but small numbers when compared to the number of Iraql civilians that are being killed. This strategy is frustrating to everyone who is suffering from it, but they realize it's whole purpose is to keep the Americans busy, so they believe the whole thing would collapse without their presence.

Who could gain by this? I would say there is a link between Iran/N.Korea to keep the Americans busy in Iraq. This makes it unlikely they will plan a preemtive strike against either of them. After all, the bulk of our ground troops are preoccupied with this nonsense in Iraq.

The bulk of the American public who have followed this war from it's inception, have had the feeling that democracy was not all that important in resolving the Iraq problem. We realize that democracy has it's place and that it doesn't work everywhere. As in the case of democracy in Russia under Putin or in Venezuela under Chavez, these are not idealistic democracies. Frankly, it is unlikely that democracy will survive in these two countries, unless their present leadership steps down.

The five-man junta idea for Iraq is downright scary, but not as scary as the war lord concept of Afghanistan, or the division of Iraq into three groups with the Kurds to the north, Sunnis somewhere in the middle, and the Shiite with the rest of it.

Some alternative to traditional democratic government needs to be considered. It's obvious that the way it is, is not working. If for no other reason, it's failure is due to it being an American/British plan. They will not allow this plan to succeed.

The lesson to be learned here, is to stay out of internal affairs of foriegn lands. The objective now should be to concentrate on an exit strategy. The British have been givin their walking papers. They should grab them and not look back!

To say we look foolish is an understatement. We look foolish because we are playing into the hands of Iran. The tail is wagging the dog because they are successful in keeping the US from leaving, thus imposing a bigger threat on them. Wake up in Washington, it's time to take control of this situation. You had it and lost it, but worse than that, you didn't recognize that you lost it. How dumb is that?

This whole fiasco in Iraq is brought on by politicians who insist on running everything. They insist on calling the shots regarding the war, they ignore the intelligence community, they make combat decisions based on political influences, but most serious is the fact, they don't fight to win!

The Iraqi people are never going to accept a puppet government in the image of ours. The civil war is causing many deaths with an amazing 655,000 since the start of the war. We need to back off and let them decide what kind of government that they want to live under, and even if it is not favorable to the U. S. it is alright as it is their country and not ours, we should have never started this insane war in the first place. While Saddam was a bad man and his sons were monsters we have also had many atrocity's against the Iraqi people.

2 proposals now. One is to dissolve parliament, kick out the current president and ministers and install a military junta of 5 strongmen to restore order. Military law and curfews would be imposed. The other is to divide Iraq into 3 stong provinces, with a very weak federal government. The provinces would likely be governed under Sharia law. The second proposal has the support of a former Republican Secretary of State, and is the more likely one to be adopted. Either way, the US did a really great job of establishing democracy in the middle east.

I have the sites because I was going to ask this very question!

It took most democracies that exist a while to figure things out. Our own nation, the US, had to fight a separatist war that lasted many years. In the long run, a democratic state in Iraq and the region is the most positive possible outcome of the recent situation, regardless of the loss of life that might occur in the event leading to the freedom of Iraq, and particularly its female population.

Half of the people in this nation voted for gore. No, a true democracy is not the best way. A republic is. If people were intelligent, and moral, and exercised some level of stoic understanding, then yes, democracy would be the way. However, because people like you are scum, we need electoral colleges, and a republic.

P.S. I was in Iraq. You don't even know how ludicrous it is to say that we are losing. You're laughable.

There is no government than Democracy. The problem is Islamic clerics who only teach terror, murder, and destruction. You can not have democracy with religion mixed in. The Government must take the important stept of removing religon from the government and removing the terrorist shiite, and sunny clerics from the lives of the young people they teaching terror to.Islam is a terrorist, haterd type religion which will never be peaceful until you force them out of the government.
There will never be peace until the women of islam are freed, and are able to determin their own lives outside of the their domineering males owners.
Thjis is not just aAmerican/British policy at stake. It is democracy for the world and eventually peace which is at stake.
The battle will be fought over there or over here, and in Europe.

The better a political system is in theory, the worse it is in practice. The worse it is in theory the better it is in practice.

The best form of government is a benevolent dictatorship, what Aristotle called the Philosopher King.
