We've only had it like 6 months and it's always worked fine then yesterday it stopped going up and down automatically. Theres nothing in the way of the sensor we checked. The only thing we can think of is that its been raining non-stop for the past few days. If water got on the sensor somehow would that cause it to short?

Could you try this... get some WD40 (a spray can of lubricant) spray the tracks the door goes up and down on in several places then use the manual release and push the door open and closed several times. This will make sure that door is not sticking (I had a problem with my door where it would not open and close properly, I've fixed it this way several times) after that then try flipping the lever to lock the door back in place so the garage door opener will engage it and try using the door opener again to see if this makes any difference.

Check the alignment of the sensors they have to point at one another. If this is not it check to make sure the wires are plugged in solid at the back of the sensors and also in the back of the garage door opener. They may have loosened up.

i'm assuming you have electric powered eyes to surrender the door if some thing is in, or crosses it direction, jointly as working. the two some thing is between the electrical powered eyes or they're now no longer in alignment to a minimum of one yet another. If the two of those issues exist you get precisely what you defined.
