they dont' have to be....one just has to be a lighter color, to distinguish who attacks first (white usually) , and go from there. The chessboard should be of a lighter and darker color also.to distinguish where the pieces go

I dun think its a rule tp say that it must be black and white. It can be other colours as long as it can be differentiate between the two sides.....

It depends on which set you're using. Regardless, the colors are always different to make sure we know who's using what.

its tradition to have black and white pawns. "back in the day" people would carve them out of soap... and find funny looking rocks of course soap was white and black was rocks.

They can be anything you want as long as the two sides are different in color or different in shapes
