If you have a lathe that uses a flywheel, the purpose would be to add momentum to the rotation. So when the cutting blade cuts in with uneven drag (like when you start with square corners and you're cutting them to make it round), the speed will be more easily maintained steady.

there is no flywheel in a lathe,
just compound gears with levers to interchange
them for speed increase or reduction
