To answer your question, yes I would be willing to wear kilts bearing family/clan tartans other than my own and actually do. As another poster stated, it is nice to have a connection and for certain situations (formal ones like weddings or tartan balls) I also tend to stick to my clan tartan. But as someone who wears kilts on a VERY frequent basis a little variety is preferred. I do so love some of the "universal tartans" such as the Pride of Scotland and the Black Watch as well as district tartans. I also think some clan tartans are absolutely brilliant and typically find that as long as I am not disrespectful to the tartan or clan in anyway, people are usually flattered when I wear a kilt in their tartan. The only tartan I personally would not be willing to wear is the Balmoral unless a member of the Royal Family were to give me permission. It isn't illegal but it would be in poor taste. You also would be hard pressed to find a reputable kilt maker who would fit you for a kilt in it. So I say enjoy not only the wonderful variety of the tartans.

You could wear a kilt if your getting married or something. Wearing it in publice would be a bit weird though, but what ever your choice. And sure non-scottish people should be allowed to wears kilts. Girls in Catholic High School wear kilts.

I'll tell you, the kid up the street wore one to school the other day. Now this kid is the one who rides a unicycle and tends to go left when the rest of the group goes right so it was no big surprise to see such. Personally, I thought it took real guts to do so and I was impressed. Oh, he's not a Scot by the way. Nope, I think if you've got the balls and the 'tude' to pull it off then go for it, there's enough 'sheep' in the world

Sure, but as a man, there is that eternal question, are you suppose to wear underwear under a kilt or to comando? (free balling)

A guy in a kilt is super-hot, especially if he has nice legs.

I believe if you have a tartan you have a Scottish background somewhere in your family history

I once asked a Scotsman "Is anything worn under your kilt?" he replied "No it is all in perfect working order!"

whatever people wear is not your business.

Am I allowed to wear a cowboy hat if I'm not from Texas?

Can I wear a sombrero if I'm not mexican?

Can I drink beer if I'm not German?

Can I listen Tango if I'm not Argentinean?
