When I use brads or sew on card I cut a piece of card in a matching /contrasting colour slightly large than my work and mount my work on that before placing it on the card.

I usually put the brads or do the sewing on the individual pieces first, then glue everything on the blank cover. Or I will cover the inside with another piece of paper with a poem or greeting on it. Hope this helps.

I make cards for my family all the time and have sewen things on them. I get a blank card the same size and hot glue it inside the other one. It covers up the thread and gives me a clean slate to work with.
