i own a repair shop, and the old method of checking it might work on this one,you ran temporarily touch the sending wire to ground and have an assistant tell you how high it makes the hand rise on the gage in it,don't hold it there long though, all you want to do is see if it rises as high as it should,if not you have a bad unit, you,ll have to be care full though because the fuel pump wires are also with the same harness but this method will tell you if its working right, good luck, you may have a hard time getting the wires off of it but it can be done, good luck with it,i hope this help,s.,,PS you can use a test light to determine which wires go to the pump, the one for the sending unit you can take small piece of wire ,and go got ground at the tank and that will work fine on it,good luck.

You say that your mileage varies, does that mean when you fill the tank it takes less or more gas? When you drive 225 miles and the guage says the tank is empty how much gas does it take to fill it compared to when you drive 325 and it says empty? It may not be the gauge, it could be your driving habits vary such as stuck in traffic, leaving the engine idle, or more aggressive driving. The brand and grade of gas can also change the milage. I have a VW turbo and the change is signifcant with lower grades of gas.
