Yif oyu have time to waste, Taco Bell's Fire sauce will do the trick, no joke, but otherwise, get a 3 L beaker, put pennies in, then let add a very dilute soultion of NItric Acid, bout, .025M solution should do the trick, let set for like 10 min, then wash off with large amounts of water

Dip them quickly in Nitric acid, then WASH! Nitric melts pennies, but I am sure they will strip off the nasty outermost coat, just make sure you rinse well.
