Adam is wrong, despite his confident assurance and massive accumulation of points. It's entirely possible to rent a room for 400$ (~almost 50,000 yen) per month in Tokyo. It's just not going to be a big room.

Here is a place in Asakusa with rooms as low as 37,000 a month:

here are numerous guest houses, many within your price range in the Metropolis classifieds

Some other good resources are:

Granted, these are not going to be the cleanest, quietest, or most centrally located rooms, but they are within your price range.

♡You've already got some good info here...
So, I'll just add a bit to it.
Be sure to take a look at this site too and see if something doesn't suit your budget.

Take a look at:
"2. Foreigner inns : 1500yen~
There are some regular, dorm, and shared type inns for foreigners only. The price is usually reasonable than usual. Not only for a night, some place has weekly and monthly rent too."
It might be what you're looking for, for example:
Tatami Guest house is 40,000 yen for one month.
Check the whole list, some are even cheaper.
These places are SMALL though, keep that in mind!(^_-)-☆
Good luck, hope this helps and enjoy Tokyo!
I love living here!(*^o^*)

Even in a $20 a night hostel you wont have enough at $400. And that wont include other incidentals in your shared room hostel. You need to be a little more realistic at staying. Maybe finding an internet friend and staying at someone's home with some type of homestay sitution but that much money inTokyo ain't gonna get you much.

I'm a spanish woman and I can tell you that it depends on the city or province you are going to be and the months, because the difference could be between 500 and 800€. Normally in Madrid could be between 700€ AND 1500€ depending on the zone of the city. In the coast in summer time could be the same price because everyboby wants to rent and apartment in those months and the price increases.

There is absolutely no realistic way you can stay in Tokyo for $400 a month. If you get a homestay, then maybe, but I think that would be hard to find. It just isn't as common in Japan as I've seen in other places.

Good luck, because even the cheapest hostels will kill your budget. You may be able to find a place to crash for a few days at the time, if you check www.globalfreeloaders.com
