When you say 'serve' butter, what do you mean? My baby recipe books say you can put a bit of butter in with the purées we make (a truly small piece however) so I know that is OK. If we're talking smothering a layer of butter on a piece of toast, then NO you shouldnt. Just like you shouldnt give cow milk before a year, no chocolate, no peanut butter, etc.
As for the bread, I think 8mths is typically too early to be giving bread to babies. We started around 9 mths but my girl had 8 teeth at the time - we'd give her the end of a baguette so it was something hard to chew on. Soft bread like most American sandwhich bread is not a good idea however as babies can easily choke on it. My husband gave our daughter a chunk of soft bread when she was around 8 mths while we were at dinner one night, and sure enough she started choking. If I had seen him give it to her, I would likely have taken it away but I didnt notice. Thankfully he didnt try the bread bit for awhile after that.

Children shouldn't have cows milk under one year of age. It increases the risk of your child developing diabetes. There is commercially made organic bread and commercially made garbage bread - i'd read the label and go from there. No peanuts, no honey either before age one, so check the label for those ingredients.

Of course you can give butter but I would give it in small amounts. Don't add it to vegetables. Comercially made bread is probably better than breadmaker bread as it is not as hard, It is better toasted for a baby that age though.

Apparently from seeing other responses in Newborn & Baby to this and other questions. I was a horrid awful mother to my children because I gave them bread & Butter. Little bite sized pieces, but yeah I fed it to my babies. My babies are 5&9 they didn't get hurt from it. Just watch her the first couple times you feed it to her that she handles the food OK.
