In Texas it's called Bois d'Arc.

See URL below for more, including different names (including Osage Orange, Horse Apple, Hedge Apple [Maclura pomifera]) and pictures of the tree.

A friend of mine has a huge one growing in his yard. It gets mighty dangerous when the over 1 pound fruits are dropping from 100 feet without warning. I avoid his house in the fall.

Bois D'arc (pronounced bow dark). The fruit is called Bois D'Arc apples. Tree was used by native americans for the wood in their bows (as in bows and arrows). Commonly used in Oklahoma as a windbreak following the dust bowl, make nice trees other than they are thorny and sometimes have huge crops.

To my opinion these are good sites to go and identify your tree

There are many other sites on the net that offer large lists of plant descriptions including pictures to help you with identification. However, for uncommon or difficult to identify plants there is no guaranty that you will find what you are looking for and you could be looking for a while. Also don't forget your local nursery. They usually, can help.
