I personally think that it is just like a Marshall plan for India from US but with a motive to make India dependent on US. Though I know Marshall plan was in a different context but still. And though we all know that US does nothing until it has his own interest involved in it, like it was with Marshall plan, (all US needed were countries to buy their imported goods which it found in war ravaged europe), but now those markets are stagnating so US needs new markets and what better than the largest democracy in world. Also, US is doing it to counter china economically. So what would be great if India just concentrates on its own Fast Breeder Reactor program for growing energy needs, we have lived through many hardships for 60 years so why dont we just go through this phase and beleive in our scientists and support them,as its a matter of time like may be 10 years that our FBW program is a success. Please comment responsibly and it would be great if Indian scientist community also responds

An interesting question that you asked, and that too being an American. I appreciate the quality of your question. Well, the finer aspects of this deal are not known. That will never be known. But what can be construed by what ever information is comming out is this. The deal was an important necessity from both the US and the Indian point of view. India was denied access to the vital nuclear technology in the wake of the Pokhran 1 and pokhran 2 tests. But in both the periods, the gaps were filled by Russia and the European suppliers(especially France and Germany). Today, the energy requirements of India are soaring and in the near future(say 20 years from now) it will be a multibillion business. Moreover with the increasing scarcity of petroenergy, nuclear based electricity production is being considered as safe bet. Here comes USA. It is trying to secure a place in the Indian Nuclear market, in which it is already lagging. The second aspect is the defacto nuclear status that India has achieved for itself. Questions are being raised about the ramifications of North Korea's, Israel's, Iran's and Pakistan's nuclear darkism on the Indo-US nuclear deals. What few people know is that India is a leader in the nuclear technology. The Indian scientists were some of the original contributers to the nuclear technology. India had to rely on the other countries only because it was a poor country and did not have the time and money to redesign and refabricate the already proven technologies. Hence it went out to buy it. But at any point of time, this country is capable of designing any aspect of the latest and cutting edge products that this science has to offer. USA knows this. Moreover, after the 3 miles Island disaster, the civilian nuclear energy programme in USA is at virtual standstill, and the present US nuclear industry needs a fresh breadth of life, both in terms of fresh technology and market. India with its impeccable non prolifiration track record is a perfect trading partner.America is fully aware that India has mastered the 3 stages of the nuclear energy cycle. Moreover, the Pressurised Heavy water breeder reactor of India is original in design, unique, and highly reliable . This shows India's maturity in mastering a very difficult technology. USA is interested in PHWBR because it is the technology of the future. Moreover in the scheme of the doctrine of "Global American Dominance" India is being seen a stable, powerful and reliable ally in the near future. It also comes in the China Containment Theory. USA wanted to bring India into its sphere of influence before it became part of any other alliance. Hence securing the nuclear deal was important so that India became the STRATEGIC partner of USA. What is instore for India? Well, nuclear fuel is the single most important requirement. Moreover, USA's cooperation is very important for securing dual use technology from USA and from the rest of the world. What India will loose? Most importantly, nothing much. India has never followed an aggressive nuclear weapon's policy. It is already in a sufficiently charged environment as far as conventional WMDs are concerned. What USA has to loose?? Again, nothing much. Apart from the fact that NPT is a dead horse, and it may have to design a new nuclear world order. So if you see this deal from both the point of views( of India and USA), it is a win win situation. An important question of US dominance on Indian Nuclear Programme and its eventual capping is being asked. For that school of thought, I have just this to say, the technology of the future is going to be more and more sovereign, and freeflowing. Moreover, containment is virtually impossibe because Indian Technology has achieved criticality and a certain degree of autonomy and it would be impossible for any country, Even USA, to achieve total dominance on the nuclear energy programme.

I think your skepticism on the Marshall plan is over-the-top. There was no Marshall plan after WWI and look what happened in Germany. It was NOT a slam dunk in the US politically to pony up all that money to restore Europe. There was substantial risk to the US in putting so much resources into such a bizzare place as Europe where people were cooking each other.

Sure the US has an economic interest in providing technology to India. But more they want to have a hand in the balance of power in that more and more unstable part of the world.

America is desperate to have a military base in south Asia. and they see India as the number one target because of its animosity towards Pakistan.America is going to make a lot of money out India and Pakistan. the only way for America to do this is by helping one country first and then next. after America has helped India it will come to Pakistan and say India has so and so why don't you have the same and America will help.
lets face it America is a pathological liar and a hypocrite

Don't get emotional. Nuclear deal with India is entirely for different reasons. There are big guys in the background who want their fair share. This is only an excuse.
