IN this multi step equation I cannot figure it out, because the variables are on the outside for some reason.

move y to the left by adding 3y on both sides
5y+3y -10 = 14
8y -10 = 14
add 10 on both sides to cancell -10 on left

8y = 14+10 = 24

divide by 8 on both sides

y = 24/8 = 3

Bring the terms with the y letters to one side and the constants (the numbers without a letter) to the other side of the equation. Keep in mind that when crossing the equal sign, signs change to their opposites.

LOOK:

5y-10=14-3y

I will bring -3y to the left side, which then becomes +3y.
I will then bring -10 over to the right side and make it +10.

5y + 3y = 14 + 10

Next: Simplify each side.

On the left side we get: 8y

On the right side we get: 24

We now have this:

8y = 24

Next: Divide each side by the coefficient, which in this sample happens to be 8. See it? A coefficient is a number that stands next to a letter in algebra. Got it?

I will divide BOTH sides of the equation by 8.

My final answer is: y = 3.

5y - 10 = 14 - 3y

5 y - 10 + 3y = 14 - 3y + 3y

Adding + 3 to both sides of the equation

8y - 10 = 14

8y - 10 + 10 = 14 + 10

Adding + 10 to both sides of the equation

8y = 24

8y/8 = 24/8

Dividing 8 on both sides of the equation

y = 3

The answer is y = 3

The solution set { 3 }

add 3y to both sides

5y - 10 + 3y = 14 - 3y + 3y

8y - 10 = 14

add 10 to both sides

8y - 10 + 10 = 14 + 10
8y = 24

Divide both sides by 8

y = 3.

get all the y's on the left, the rest on the right and simplify:
5y+3y = 14+10 : add 3y + 10 to both sides
8y = 24

y = 3

You want to get the variable by itself, so when there are two of them, get rid of one by adding its opposite to both sides. Let's add 3y to each side of the equation. That will give you
8y - 10 = 14. Then add 10 to both sides.
8y = 24
y = 3
